LOCATION:
North Park, San Diego, California
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Kalos built in the rapidly gentrifying San Diego neighborhood of North Park was owned by a prominent San Diego affordable housing developer, Community Housing Works. An dense urban infill lot was to be built out to capacity to maximize feasibility. Nevertheless, the open space areas remaining became critical to ensure a healthy living environment for the typically under-served citizens, most commonly known as the working class. Two central courtyards (over the garage below) became the properties focal points. McCullough encouraged large roll up doors at the community and laundry rooms that would allow the spaces to spill out seamlessly into the courtyards. Exiting the laundry room McCullough designed a custom playground, a steel bright red garden fire hose from a hand selected fire hydrant intended for the kids to play on as parent did laundry.
