Located in San Diego's University City neighborhood, Avia La Jolla reimagines independent senior living through a vibrant, resort-inspired environment that encourages connection, wellness, and an active outdoor lifestyle. Set within a sprawling campus surrounded by natural canyon topography, the landscape was designed to seamlessly integrate the residential buildings with inviting outdoor spaces that feel like a natural extension of the community.

McCullough collaborated with the project team to create a landscape that supports daily life while celebrating Southern California's coastal climate. Accessible pedestrian pathways connect residents to community amenities, including the clubhouse, fitness center, pool, and spa, promoting walkability and outdoor engagement throughout the campus. Thoughtfully designed gathering spaces featuring fire pits, barbecue areas, and landscaped courtyards encourage neighbors to connect, relax, and enjoy the outdoors together.

A carefully curated planting palette reflects the surrounding coastal environment, providing seasonal interest, shade, and year-round beauty while complementing the contemporary architecture. Through purposeful site planning and human-centered landscape design, Avia La Jolla offers residents an engaging outdoor experience that enhances independence, fosters community, and supports healthy, active living.
