BALBOA PARK EAST QUAD
CLIENT:
City of San Diego
LOCATION:
San Diego, CA
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Previous City of San Diego Architect, Michael Stepner FAIA, engaged local legendary architect Rob Quigley and McCullough in an effort to revision the southeast quadrant of Balboa Park as this corner had previously been “clipped” by the construction of Interstate 5 and left isolated from the heart of Balboa Park. McCullough and Quigley worked with the City of San Diego, San Diego Unified School District (San Diego High School) and San Diego Community College District (San Diego Community College) on a new vision for the area that included Park and Russ Boulevard improvements, bringing back the historic San Diego Stadium, and pedestrian bridge improvements to the existing bridge that currently connects the San Diego High School Stadium to Balboa Park across Interstate 5. Mr. Stepner presented the plan to City Council and received unanimous support for the idea in 2025.
