PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Open for rental in 2023, this apartment housing development wraps a historic structure designed by one of San Diego’s best known modernists from the mid 20th century, William Krisel. The developer demolished a automobile service station and oversized parking lot and then worked with the City of San Diego Historical Resources staff to incorporate the Krisel building into the development. The Krisel piece, originally office space, was repurposed into additional luxury residential units. Architects DBRDS then designed new rental units in place of where the service station and parking lot once existed to wrap the Krisel building with additional units for a total of 82. McCullough worked with the team to add a central pool area, amenity courtyards and and exterior spaces that are consistent with the work of mid century landscape architecture. Breeze block, vibrant colors, and bold textures were combined with contemporary requirements. Providing drought tolerant plant material and dealing with storm water on site, all with a focus on the human experience and a contextual understanding of the surrounding neighborhood make for a livable and positive addition to the Midway community of San Diego.
