EMTS Laboratory Remodel
CLIENT:
Environmental Monitoring and Technical Services (EMTS)
LOCATION:
San Diego, CA
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
McCullough reimagined the landscape for the Environmental Monitoring and Technical Services (EMTS) Laboratory Remodel, an initiative rooted in sustainability, ecological resilience, and California’s decarbonization goals. Aligned with the City of San Diego’s Zero Emissions Building Operations Policy (ZEMBOP), our design prioritizes biodiversity, habitat restoration, and long-term performance.
The landscape preserves existing trees and integrates drought-tolerant, native plant palettes to support pollinators and wildlife. Permeable hardscape materials and organic maintenance practices further reduce the site’s environmental footprint while supporting stormwater management and ecosystem health.
A layered planting strategy strengthens site resilience, while interpretive signage invites visitors to engage with the native landscape and learn about its ecological value. The result is a high-performing, low-impact design that balances function, beauty, and education.
We worked closely with Sillman Architects and the EMTS team to ensure an integrated, forward-thinking design approach that reflects a shared commitment to sustainable innovation, creating not just a place, but a lasting contribution to San Diego’s green future.
