San Diego City Council Approves New Urban Development in North Park

February 05, 2015  /  David McCullough

MCL-Skyport-Northpark

McCullough Landscape Architecture (MLA), led by its two owners, David and Catherine McCullough, are onboard to design the landscape amenities for a new North Park housing development recently approved by the San Diego City Council. The “Arizona Street Development” will encompass 194 units. In conjunction with urban designers and architects at Skyport Studio, the all-encompassing concept will inspire a sense of comfort and blend with the existing community.

In announcing the project, David McCullough, the lead landscape architect noted, “We were instrumental in designing the project to encourage street activation on all sides. Creating front porches adjacent to residential neighbors and a very energetic Texas Street experience along the commercial side were integral to the design.”

The first phase will focus on 118 market-rate units, with the second 76 units for seniors, including at least 23 affordable units. Approval by the San Diego City Council was unanimous, with Councilwoman Lorie Zapf remarking that “…we made sure there is land-use planning that allows residents to age in their communities where they feel most comfortable.” An added bonus is having the Mid-City Rapid bus line within walking distance of the project.

The project will be bordered by Texas and Arizona Streets, and Howard Avenue, with construction slated to begin in 2015.

“This is, in many ways, an ideal location for this kind of development,” said Councilman Todd Gloria. Additional project support comes from the LBGT Community Center, providing onsite services for the incoming residents.

McCullough Landscape Architecture has focused on the design of plantings that will surround the development, enhancing the neighborhoods and bringing a true sense of home, safety and comfort to residents. MLA continues to broaden and enhance its portfolio of outstanding community design that includes Kalos Apartments, Walgreen’s North Park, Olea Little Italy, The Pointe at Crown Point and Albert Einstein Academies Charter Middle School in Grant Hill.

SAY HELLO TO BEN AND ERIC. MCCULLOUGH LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE IS GROWING!

October 29, 2014  /  David McCullough

Say Hello to Ben and Eric

Ben received a Bachelor's in Architectural Studies from Connecticut College and has a Master's in Urban Design from the University of Miami School of Architecture. Serendipity played a part in Ben's future when moving from Florida to San Francisco. His car broke down here, and while waiting for auto repairs, Ben fell in love with our city. San Diego is a perfect place for Ben, the action sports capital. He loves to hike and snorkel, is an avid skateboarder and co-owner of a skateboard company with his best friend. Watch out! He's also a second--degree black belt. His outstanding capabilities include design development, quality control and document development for our clients' projects.

Eric is a recent graduate from Cal Poly, Pomona with a B.S. in Landscape Architecture. He began his career as a lead landscape designer for a design/build construction company. Now with MLA, he will work towards his professional license as a landscape architect. Eric was born in Pennsylvania, and moved to Orange County where he went to high school. Presently, Eric is soon packing for a move to Mira Mesa with his fiancée, Wendy. Besides landscape architecture, Eric enjoys active hobbies that include working out at the gym, sports and hiking. His project involvement at MLA includes design development, client meetings and document development.

MLA & SNOWFLAKE BUILDING PARTICIPATES IN INTERNATIONAL PARK(ing) DAY

September 25, 2014  /  David McCullough

“If you blinked you may have missed it” is what CBS 8 reporter Larry Himmel said as he captured a few comments from people while shooting video of the Snowflake Bakery Building and Makers Quarter's parklet. The site was designed by many local neighboring businesses, including McCullough Landscape Architecture (MLA), for a worldwide celebration of “greening” cities, by turning metered parking spaces into mini-parks throughout downtown San Diego. This movement is called PARK(ing) Day and happens each year on the third Friday of the month.

Along with the succulent living walls and hanging planter boxes provided by MLA, food and fashion trucks and coffee served by a local roaster, plus interactive games, the parklet was enjoyed by many on a gorgeous sunny San Diego day. MLA was more than happy to be a participant in this growing international movement to make city locations more people friendly and enhance the urban environment.
