San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) Student Housing

CLIENT:

San Diego Community College District

LOCATION:

San Diego, CA

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

McCullough is leading the landscape design for a transformative 284-unit student housing complex at San Diego City College, located on the block bounded by 16th, 17th, B, and C Streets. As one of California’s first community college projects funded through the Affordable Student Housing Program, the development will provide below-market housing and critical support services for low-income students, veterans, and former foster youth.

In collaboration with The Michaels Organization and SDCCD, McCullough is designing vibrant, water-efficient outdoor spaces that enhance student life, promote wellness, and connect to the broader campus. Our scope includes landscaping, courtyards at the entry, podium, and roof levels, site grading, bioswales, stormwater detention, and amenities such as study areas, seating, bike storage, and gathering spaces.

The design addresses the site’s urban flood zone constraints with surface-based stormwater strategies and incorporates low-maintenance, regional plantings to support biodiversity. Streetscape improvements follow the Center City Streetscape Manual, and sustainable features, such as shade trees, native vegetation, and reflective materials, align with the City’s Climate Action Plan. Once complete, the project will help advance equity and livability for the SDCCD community.
