Layers of History, A Unifying Vision: Reimagining San Diego High School

May 28, 2026  /  David McCullough

Some projects are professional milestones; others are deeply personal. For our firm, the ongoing modernization of San Diego High School is both. Nestled in the very heart of the community where we live and work, this historic campus holds a special place in our hearts as the alma mater of our children, Will and Molly. Needless to say, our family has spent a lot of personal time on this campus, making our commitment to its future run incredibly deep.

The Challenge: 150 Years of History, Layer by Layer

Founded in the late 1800s, San Diego High School has evolved dynamically for nearly 150 years. However, decades of incremental growth occurred without a cohesive master plan. The result was a campus composed of literal layers upon layers of history, but lacking any unifying components or clear connectivity.

Our journey with the campus began in the early 2010s when we were brought on to develop a whole-site master plan—an effort that was long overdue. Following the successful completion of that master plan, the San Diego Unified School District secured both voter approval to extend its leasehold on the southwest corner of Balboa Park and a crucial bond measure to finance the campus's modern future.

A Powerful Partnership for Modernization

With funding secured, we partnered with prime consultant Architects Mosher Drew to facilitate the first major phases of this extensive whole-site modernization. This long-term endeavor has already brought incredible transformations to life. To date, successfully completed phases include:

  • A completely redesigned, high-functioning parking facility.

  • State-of-the-art baseball and softball fields.

  • A beautifully remodeled administration building.

  • Completely upgraded central quad spaces that serve as the vibrant heart of student life.

The Site as a Civic Catalyst

What makes this project truly extraordinary is our alignment with the campus and school district facilitators. From day one, the leadership team viewed this site not just as a school, but as a critical landscape catalyst for Downtown San Diego. Everyone involved takes immense pride in understanding the high school’s profound importance within the broader urban fabric of America's Finest City.

Faced with a sprawling campus in need of a common thread, the district facilitators saw an opportunity where the landscape itself could be the unifying ingredient. That is exactly where our team’s expertise came into play—weaving social spaces, athletic facilities, and historic identity into a cohesive, singular experience.

Though this has been a patient, multi-decade endeavor, we are thrilled to be pressing forward toward the completion of this milestone round of modernization in late 2027. We are deeply honored to help write the next chapter of San Diego High School's legacy—for the city, for the students, and for our own family.
