Last month, David and Catherine McCullough attended the ALIS Design+ hospitality conference in Los Angeles, a leading industry gathering focused on hotel architecture, construction, and design. The event brought together hotel owners, developers, architects, interior designers, and consultants to explore emerging trends shaping the future of hospitality environments.

Several key themes emerged, including a renewed momentum around property improvement plans (PIPs), renovations, and adaptive reuse projects—particularly within the higher mid-market segment. These shifts reflect an industry prioritizing strategic reinvestment and repositioning, creating opportunities to enhance guest experience while extending the life and relevance of existing properties.

Sustainability was also a focus at the conference. Panels explored how biophilic design principles and environmentally responsible operational strategies are becoming increasingly integral to hospitality projects. These conversations reinforced the growing importance of creating spaces that not only support ecological resilience but also foster meaningful human connection to nature—values that align closely with McCullough’s design philosophy.

It was especially inspiring to see collaborator Harry Wheeler, Principal at JCJ Architecture represented among the speakers, contributing insights on sustainable practices in hospitality environments. The conference also provided valuable opportunities to connect with industry peers and collaborators, strengthening relationships and sharing perspectives on the evolving design landscape.

Events like ALIS Design+ serve as an important forum for innovation and knowledge exchange, and we look forward to applying these insights to future hospitality projects that prioritize sustainability, adaptability, and thoughtful placemaking.
